South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control Bureau of Air Quality
Brian graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1989 with a BS in Science and Math. He started his career with SCDHEC in June 1990 in the stationary source enforcement section of the Bureau of Air Quality. In 2005, Brian moved to the Air Quality Standards and Assessment Section in the Bureau of Air Quality to concentrate on mobile source emissions and reductions.
Brian has worked on all transportation and mobile source related activities for the Bureau of Air Quality. In the past 5 years over $11 million dollars’ worth of diesel emission reduction projects have been implemented in South Carolina. During that time the Bureau has implemented the DERA program, completed transportation conformity reviews, submitted an attainment SIP, championed alternative fuels, and worked with the South Carolina Trucking Association to pass a statewide commercial diesel vehicle idling reduction law.
In 2006, the South Carolina Department of Education received its first grant for a school bus diesel emission reduction program. One of those diesel emission reduction projects helped to retire the school bus Brian drove as a student bus driver in 1984 at Irmo High School.
