Proterra Unveils New Electric Buses With 350-Mile Range

proterra-catalyst-e2-electric-bus-3-1-570x3531The American electric bus company Proterra has unveiled a new series of long-range buses — the Catalyst E2 series — possessing a nominal range of 194–350 miles per full-charge.The electric buses, outfitted with battery pack capacities of between 440–660 kilowatt-hours (kWh), are of course able to go much further than that in the right conditions.

Last month, at Michelin’s Laurens Proving Grounds, one of the E2s even managed to go more than 600 miles in a single charge (under test conditions), according to the Proterra press release. If you’re wondering about the name, “E2” refers to “Energy Efficient,” which is certainly a believable moniker, considering the model’s apparent performance capabilities.

The buses’ high nominal range means that they will be able to meet the needs of a wide variety of different bus/transit needs — or, as the press release puts it, “the Catalyst E2 series is capable of serving the full daily mileage needs of nearly every US mass transit route on a single charge.”The CEO of Proterra, Ryan Popple, commented: “Proterra’s primary goal has always been to create a purpose-built, high-performance electric vehicle that can serve every single transit route in the United States. Today, with the unveiling of the Catalyst E2 Series, that goal has been achieved.

The question is no longer who will be an early adopter of this technology, but rather who will be the last to commit to a future of clean, efficient, and sustainable mobility. With the Catalyst E2 offering a no-compromise replacement for all fossil fuel buses, battery-electric vehicles have now broken down the final barrier to widespread market adoption.”The new Catalyst E2 electric bus series joins the Catalyst FC and XR series in Proterra’s lineup.
